20 Ways to Snag Your Readers’ Attention

Here’s the scenario: You’re writing a sales letter. You’ve got three paragraphs to get your point across, make an impression and – hopefully – elicit a response. How do you make your case on paper?

Write tight. Keep your thoughts organized. Transition from one point to the next quickly and smoothly. In other words, make your copy flow.

You can create good flow with effective transitions. Start sentences with “and,” “but,” or “so.” Use transitional phrases like “best of all” and “that’s why.” These transitions also help make your copy sound approachable and conversational, not stiff and formal, which is key to keeping your reader interested. Here’s an example (transition words in bold):
