SAY CHEESE (not cheesy)!

Professional Publicity Photos
Do you have a professional photograph? If not, consider smiling for the camera. Photographs are valuable publicity tools that can be submitted with press releases, posted on Web sites, included in brochures, on business cards and in literature promoting speaking engagements and other special events. It’s your first introduction to potential clients, who often feel more comfortable when they can see the face behind the business.

Avoid going the passport-photo route, or your picture may look more like a “Wanted” mug shot than an inviting business photo. Sure, it’s pricier to hire a pro, but the results are well worth the investment. Like most relationships, though, the fit has to right. Many of us feel awkward in front of the camera, so it’s important to have a hook up with someone who’s skilled at helping you relax and look natural. Be sure to interview any photo guru you’re thinking of using. Some good questions to ask are:

  • What type of studio setting do you have?
  • How do you relax your subjects?
  • What backgrounds do you use for professional photos?
  • Do you shoot digitally? Will I be able to view the photos on a computer screen while we’re working?
  • What color and style clothing should I wear?
  • Can I bring my favorite music and/or bottle of wine?
  • Do you have a stylist that can do my hair and makeup?
A well-trained photographer will have numerous tricks up his or her sleeve that will help melt away your anxieties and turn the photo session into pure fun. Note: If you don’t know a professional photographer, ask your marketing pro for recommendations.
